THE CHARLTON COIN CATALOGUE and it's creator James E. Charlton by Dan Gosling, Edmonton Numismatic Society |

The year was 1952 and Canadian Numismatics was still in its infancy. James E. Charlton undertook to publish a catalogue on Canadian Coins, Tokens, & Fractional Currency. Retail prices changed quickly in the 50's and a revised catalogue was issued in 1953. Yearly editions started in 1955. The catalogue sported a new hardcover (and a reduced size of 5 1/8" by 7 3/4") in 1960. The 19th edition in 1971 was available in hardcover and card cover. The hardcover was discontinued after the 1973 edition. An addendum was published for the 1976 edition. During the years of 1979-1984, two editions were published, Winter, and Summer. A special 36th Anniversary Edition, limited to 1000 copies, was published in 1988. J. E. Charlton and W. K. Cross (Publisher) autographed each copy. This special edition included a reprint of the 1952 1st edition, the 1988 42nd Edition of The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins, the 1987 2nd Edition of The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money, and the 1988 1st Edition of The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Colonial Tokens. 1996 saw a special 50th Anniversary Edition published in both English and French.
